Mass Disorders In Tallinn Caused By Dismantling Of The Memorial Of Soldier-Liberator

A few days ago Estonian Government decided to dismantle the memorial also known as “The Memorial of Soldier-Liberator”, dedicated to soviet soldiers, who died liberating Estonia from Nazi troops in 1944.

soldat.jpg This action is a part of almost 15-year efforts of Estonian government to re-write the history. They already opened memorials dedicated to memory of Nazi SS soldiers, they allowed parades of former SS troopers, at the same time they have banned Soviet symbols treating USSR far worse than Nazi Germany.

What’s going on there, April 26 2007?

Thousands of protesters are on the streets of Tallinn, Estonian capital city. Police forced them off the memorial square with water, gas, grenades and brute force. There are injured people.

Witness says: “I was there. I have no words to describe what I felt, there are no such words. I was able to capture some of the events on my mobile phone, will upload it sometime, but now I can tell only one thing: don’t believe disinformation which will be in tomorrow’s mass media. They will say tomorrow that evil mob attacked police forcing them to defend. I tell you this: people on the square held until last moment. Nobody attacked the police. Everybody just stayed there and shouted slogans. Then police attacked. First they used some gas, then shot the crowd with grenades with tear-gas, then - storm grenades with light effects. Half of the crowd was women.”

Euronews are showing nothing as of now. Like it is not happening.

I’ll update the story with pictures and video from the streets of Tallinn. Continue reading →

New Links Standard For Web 2.0 Proposal

Web 1.0 has a simple rule: if you see something link this, this is a hyper link to some other page. Web 2.0 with AJAX parts now offers another type of links, when there is no page reload.

I would like to propose that AJAX links to be different: something like this or like this. Both proposed links decorations indicate that these are the links, but special.

1. Traditional, leading to a new page or complete page reload.

2. AJAX-style links, when page is not being reloaded (maybe partially).

Unlike regular links, AJAX links are not disrupting normal work flow and keep users on the same page.

YouTube Plug-in Fixed On The Fly

When I published my previous story, I found out that the message “build on the fly” is more than applicable to this very moment.

The problem was: TubeLoem plug-in, which suppose to convert YouTube ID into embedded video, did’t work. Instead of YouTube video visitors could see “[yt]…[/yt]” string, where “…” was YouTube ID of the videofile it suppose to display.
I fixed it real time, within about 20-25 minutes, including debug and test.

If Programmers Had To Build Planes

This is a really good visualization of what is going on in programmers’ world. This is exactly what “make changes on the fly” means.
